What Human Food Can Guinea Pigs Eat?

The Best Human Foods for Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are adorable, small animals that can make wonderful pets. They require a specific diet to stay healthy and happy, but they can also enjoy some of the food that humans eat as well. If you own a guinea pig or are considering getting one, here is everything you need to know about what human food your cavy can consume.

Guinea pigs love fresh vegetables and should have access to them every day. The best vegetables for guinea pigs include romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, carrots (shredded), bell peppers (all colors), celery leaves, squash (cooked or raw), peas (cooked or raw) and cucumbers. Vegetables should be washed thoroughly before feeding them to your guinea pig since they will be eating them raw.

Fruits are also an important part of a guinea pig’s diet and provide essential vitamins and minerals that their bodies need. Fruits such as apples (without seeds), pears (cored), strawberries, bananas, blueberries and blackberries all make great snacks for cavies! However it’s important to note that fruits contain sugar so these treats should be given in moderation—no more than 1-3 teaspoons per day!

Grains & Legumes

Grains like cooked oatmeal and plain cheerios cereal make excellent snacks for guinea pigs as long as there isn’t any added sugar or flavorings included in the ingredients list. Legumes like cooked kidney beans are an additional protein source when fed in moderation – no more than 1 teaspoon per day! Additionally most whole grains like brown rice or quinoa can be given occasionally too; just ensure they’re properly cooked beforehand so your cavy doesn’t choke on them!
